About our Science Curriculum and Instruction

Our science program is based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, Benchmarks for Science Literacy, and A Framework for K-12 Science Education. We approach science conceptually; using a lens of the seven crosscutting concepts from the Framework:

    1. Patterns
    2. Cause and Effect: Mechanism and Explanation
    3. Scale, Proportion, and Quantity
    4. Systems and System Models
    5. Energy and Matter: Flows, Cycles, and Conservation
    6. Structure and Function
    7. Stability and Change.

Quality science instruction is dependent on giving students early experiences in science that pique their curiosity and get them interested in science. Students should be encouraged to ask questions, collect objects and organisms, count and measure, make observations, organize collections and observations, and have valuable discussions about their findings. Hands-on experiences are important, but the discussions students and teachers have before, during, and after those experiences are essential for concept development, formative assessment, and the steps to science literacy.
